Forthcoming Routledge Textbook
(Available in Mid-2026)
Increasingly, researchers worldwide are expected to conduct science that has societal impact. Engaging decision-makers serves as a core competence for this new generation of STEM professionals, but is not traditionally a skill for which they are trained. This textbook provides both an overview of the empirical literature on what we know about communicating science for use in policy processes and a step-by-step guide for scientists and engineers in planning and implementing their own engagement.
Designed by an international team of co-authors for use in academic classrooms and professional development workshops, or as a personal guide for individual researchers, a summary of key points and exercises at the end of each chapter directs readers in developing specific strategies, tactics, and content.

The collaboration of co-authors from the U.S., U.K., Europe, Latin America, and Asia sets the book apart. By identifying core lessons for communicating science for policy that are applicable to international audiences and providing case examples from different countries, the book aims to serve English-speaking audiences across the globe.

This summer 2025, our team is offering a free online certificate in "Communicating Science for Policy" based on our upcoming Routledge textbook. The certificate is designed for researchers and intermediaries working with researchers and policymakers.
Across three engaging sessions, participants will learn how evidence is used in policy, to decide whom to engage and how, to clearly communicate complex science and uncertainty, and strategically deliver evidence that decision-makers need. The training emphasizes interactive learning through real-world case studies and practical exercises, enabling participants to directly apply these skills.
